Image Metadata Prompt Injection: PNG, JPEG, and XMP Text Checks
The multimodal input path can inspect text-bearing fields in supplied image bytes.
What 1-SEC checks
The multimodal input path can inspect text-bearing fields in supplied image bytes. Its image helper recognizes PNG and JPEG signatures and examines implemented metadata paths such as PNG text chunks, JPEG comments/EXIF, and XMP strings for instruction-like content. The cited structural fixtures test suspicious and benign metadata rather than image pixels.
Required telemetry and context
Relevant input events: document_upload, file_attachment, image_input. Use a trusted producer at the real application boundary.
raw_data (Base64 of original image bytes)content_type (image/png or image/jpeg)filename
Field names above describe relevant context, not a complete API request. Consult the current event contract for envelope and detail requirements. Preserve booleans, numbers, and strings as the receiving handler expects them. Agent-provided text cannot independently verify identity or authorization.
Deployment, prevention, and response
Retain the original attachment bytes and correct MIME context from the trusted upload path. Reproduce a synthetic PNG text chunk, JPEG comment, XMP field, and benign metadata control. Track which image revision was actually sent to the model; re-encoding can remove or change metadata. Apply media handling and model-ingestion policy separately rather than treating a clean metadata scan as proof that an image is safe.
Record the source event, affected agent/host, actual target, policy decision, and response result. Review enforcement configuration separately from detection. A recommendation, selected action, dry-run record, and completed action are different outcomes.
Reproduce the source fixtures
From a checkout of the linked 1-SEC source revision, run the selected fixtures with the repository's Go toolchain. These commands run tests; they do not execute a real attack against your systems.
go test ./internal/modules/llmfirewall -run '^(TestScanPNGMetadata_InjectionInTextChunk|TestScanPNGMetadata_BenignTextChunk|TestScanJPEGMetadata_InjectionInComment|TestScanXMPBlock_InjectionInDescription|TestHandleEvent_DocumentUpload_PNG)$' -count=1Selected package fixtures passed locally. Helper fixtures establish only their explicit assertions; any accompanying handler fixture may check only error-free dispatch. Synthetic source tests do not establish production prevention, media coverage, or framework compatibility.

// The alert is processed through the pipeline — if we got here without panic, integration works
}Tuning, evaluation, and coverage limits
This is metadata inspection with no OCR, pixel-level instruction detection, or universal steganography analysis. Other image formats and unsupported or compressed metadata representations may be missed; the PNG parser does not decompress every text-chunk format. A harmless metadata description can quote attack language. The document-upload fixture checks dispatch without asserting an emitted alert.
Evaluate this behavior with representative authorized activity and a controlled known-positive case. Investigate the exact rule, inputs, and state before suppressing an alert. Do not assume a hard-coded heuristic is a configurable setting. Measure your own deployment; the source fixtures do not establish a benchmark, detection rate, compliance certification, or incident-prevention claim.
